Sugaring Hair Removal and Body Treatments

FAQ

What is sugaring?

Sugaring is an ancient form of hair removal created in Egypt. A paste made of sugar, water and lemon juice is applied to the skin as a form of epilation, meaning the hair is fully removed from the follicle or "root". With epilation hair takes on average 4-8 weeks to grow back, depending on the area of the body.

How is sugaring different from waxing?

Sugar paste is used instead of wax. Since it's only made from sugar, water and lemon juice it is 100% natural, non-toxic and safe for sensitive skin. There is no risk of being burned with sugaring, because the paste is only warmed, never heated to a hot temperature. It is also water soluble, so if it gets on hairs you don't want to remove or your clothing, it's easily dissolved away with warm water. Sugaring is also more eco-friendly since the paste is biodegradable, and it doesn't require sticks, applicators or strips.
The application process also differs from waxing. Sugaring paste is applied in the opposite direction of hair growth and removed in the direction of hair growth, whereas waxing is the opposite. This kind of application causes less discomfort and is more effective at removing hairs from the follicle or "root" compared to waxing where the hairs often break off at the surface level leading to immediate regrowth or ingrown hairs. Sugar paste also does not stick to live skin cells, meaning you can sugar over the same area more than once and it will not damage the skin or leave it raw.

Can I get sugared during my menstrual cycle?

Yes, as long as you arrive to your appointment with a fresh tampon in it will not affect the service. Keep in mind you are sensitive to pain right before and during your menstrual cycle due to hormone changes, so you may feel more discomfort than usual.

Can I get sugared if I'm pregnant?

Yes, sugaring paste is only made with sugar, water and lemon juice therefore it is non-toxic and safe. The pre-cleanse and post sugaring products applied to the skin are also non-toxic and safe to use during pregnancies. As with any pregnancy, always consult with your physician if you have any additional concerns.

About Emerald Esthetics

My name is Claudia Callari and I'm the owner and solo esthetician of Emerald Esthetics. I have been licensed since 2024 and specialize in sugaring hair removal and body treatments.

Sugaring is an ancient method of hair removal that began in Egypt. It's a form of epilation similar to waxing, but instead of wax a natural paste made of just sugar, water and lemon juice is applied to the skin to remove the hair. Sugaring is more effective than waxing while also being gentler on the skin so it's safe on even the most sensitive skin types.

My private studio in Deer Park is a safe space for all genders, sizes and ages. Emerald Esthetics is the place to book when you're looking for some self-care time, free of judgement.
